If you follow me on Instagram (likely where we both spend most of the time food-hunting these days), then you’ll know I love a good sarnie. It is an art unto itself, and IMHO the pleasure a great sandwich gives, can be equal to the experience of the finest creations by top gun chefs. Although on the other side of the world, a sandwich is merely another vehicle for chefs to express their gastronomy (and priced accordingly too). One such example is the wagyu sando, and for me, the one I had at Ginza Hirayama in Tokyo is one of those life-changing moments.
I cannot claim to have eaten that many sandwiches around London, so my ‘database’ is shallow compared to the few sandwich gatekeepers online. But I like what I like, and these are some things I really enjoy in London. I hope you will too when you eventually visit.
This has got it all, the filling is absolutely spot on, only teeny tiny preference is for a little less of the house-made focaccia, and a little more of the excellent filling.
2. The Reuben special (Pastrami AND salt beef) at Monty’s Deli
Go hungry, this thing is massive. The beef is superb, tender, moist and bmverh juicy. The salt levels are high for obvious, but it means the pickle will taste balanced.
This thing is comprehensively tender, from the soft, sweet lightly toasted house made broiche to the steak (presumably brined) which is cooked medium rare. With cultured butter, garlic, Portuguese mustard. It is so soft, that I could easily have a half dozen of these in one go. I had 3 in one sitting once…
…Advance warning, the spice level is 11 on this hot dog, wash down with a cold beer or sauv blanc !
5….and one from Abri in Paris. The Saturday only Katsu Sando
Yes, Sosharu does something similar, but Abri’s came first, and yes, it is absolutely epic. Only on Saturdays lunch, and worth the Eurostar daytrip there just to eat it.
