Weekly round-up of yummi-news from around london and the blogosphere, every Sunday. Brought to you, via the magic of the tube and the imagination of Kang the LE.

Dominion Theatre, Totenham court road

Honorable caretaker of the internet tubes, the most gracious LCD of your computer, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is my privilege to usher in the grand new year of 2009 with this humble round-up – the first – of the year. Before I do so, please allow me to (re) introduce myself; I am Kang, the aforementioned London Eater and for the next couple of minutes, if you let me, I will be presenting to you the highs, the lows and all shades of atrociousness which occurred over the week here on London Eater – only the lowliest of all food blogs in the virtual land. I will then move to provide you with snippets of news related to our great city of London and finally, I will conclude with but a short-list of some of the more distinguished bringers of tales of awe & splendour from across the virtual lands.

Shall I begin?

Eating. happenings here on london eater

Did you like the introduction? I live to entertain, folks and if you cracked the littlest of smiles reading that then I’ve done my job. Come now girls, smile for Kang won’t you? It’s not like I can see you. You too fella…. really, I can’t see you in any case.

Hurrah, hurrah, we all saw the fireworks display at the Eye, and did you know, it was a Frenchman who planned it this year? Hands up who was there. Nope, me neither – I went last year and hated the walk home, too many people and this year it was a case of ‘been there, done that’ so I didn’t bother. Would have made for great pictures….. but I don’t get paid to do this, so maybe next year, or not.

Yes, I am BACK after putting on the holiday pounds and I am refreshed and recharged to eat even more food in my beloved city of smoke in 2009. Am I excited? Ecstatic. Do I have alot more planned for you. Plenty. All shall be revealed in good time, of course, till then here is a round-up of what went down in the 1st week of 2009, here on LE:

A walk about at Hyde park Winter Wonderland Part one: The big stuff | Part two: The food | Part three: The people As the new year dawned on all of us, I literally froze my low hanging fruits to bring you this feature in three parts. There are lots of photos, many of the big huge colourful rides, some of the people and of course, the food. All the german grilled sausages. Yummy. Go check it out.

Waking up to a square pie Read here The first review of the new year is abit unconventional. Intoxicating Prose Douglas said it’s like me wanting to copulate with said Pie (hand on his heart too). Was I over the top or did I just prefer to make love to my food? You decide.

London Eater Greatest eats of 2008 Read here This was the last post of last year and it’s a round up of the best stuff I ate last year. Great place to start if you’re new to London Eater. It’s full of my atrocity.

London. happenings around the smoke

You know, I’m listening to classic fm as I write this, now I can’t tell Chopin from Debussy but there is a hauntingly beautiful attraction to classical music, especially when the music is designed to be hauntingly beautiful. I’m sure everyone has experienced the same thing as I have when trying to fill a void with words – the block. Oh the dreaded block. The block which manifests itself as fear of the keyboard, or putting on the next dvd when the current one ends, and spending far too long stirring the cup of coffee. Claire De Lune, Debussy, hauntingly beautiful and the words will flow like waterfall.

While we are on the topic of classique, did you know that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber – hero of the west end – is going to bring out Phantom of the Opera, the sequel… I mean the prequel, well part two in his epic chapter at the end of the year in not one but three cities. It’s all over the news, all over the world like this one . So that just means I need to catch POTO part one in the west end before it ends. Speaking of music, you should pop over to Matt Robert’s blog. Matt is a musician – Trumpeter – and according to his bio, he’s currently plying his trade in the Big Smoke (London, folks – its the smog). Anyway, he’s got a series of posts which are notebook sketch plans of his Eurobusk trip last Dec. Very cool posts, read it now.

Finally, it is apt that I reciprocate the recent links I’ve got in the new year. The kind folks over at London-eating made me their newest and favourite foodie blog of 2008… I’m super flattered (as with any pat on the back). Thanks Kate! Meanwhile, over at the BBC good food blog , Lulu the Deputy Editor of olive magazine wrote a post about handling sommeliers and she kindly referenced my quickie wine guide on sommelier jousting. Thanks Lulu!

I love links… I really do, so link. me. up. (if you wish)

Reading. happenings around the blogosphere

Lately, Ive made new friends on the internet, forgoing mummy’s wisdom about speaking to strangers, these guys are alright, oh and they have cool blogs too. First off, forget word of mouth (I’m not even going to link it) because Jay Rayner just doesn’t get it sometimes. ‘Read and subscribe’ to intoxicating prose instead, Douglas takes pleasure quite seriously. Secondly, go Thring for your supper with Oliver over at his london foodblog which scores restaurants based on what they are aiming for, rather than what he thinks they should be doing. Subtle.

Burger Blurb is brand spanking new -and quite awesome- because it’s only the latest blog to join the burger revolution. Adams’ got many, many months of burgering ahead of him, while I admire the potential of his site’s design, he’s going to have to come up with something really special to dislodge A Hamburger Today from my favourite burger blog list.

Last but not least, Jorden loves food and intends to cook a meal from a different cookbook everyday , giving her 365 days of cookbook conformity and literally living by the book.

Tomorrow and the rest of next week

I lunch at Phil Howard’s The Square and will rush that for tomorrow, but it will likely be tuesday before it comes out. Aside from that, there is also a cosy visit to Tartine in Kensington and depending on how things go, I might let you in on my visit to St Pancreas Grand too.

Until then, farewell and have a most enchanted Sunday evening.

Weekly round-up of yummi-news from around london and the blogosphere. Now released every Sunday and brought to you by a London eater.

A snowy christmas eve‘s eve special!

Good morrow fellow webbist reader, trust all is merry, jingly and that you have stocked your fridge up and someone is busy in the kitchen (as we speak) shoving all manners of savoury goodness into oversized birds (sorry vegans) while the latest brew of hot mulled herbies or cold alcoholic custards are being concocted. For there isn’t a better time to be furrily merry and no one is more so than yours truly

eating.happenings here on london eater

Say it with me: Happy Chrissymas.

No, not Christmas.

Chris-sy-mas.

Yes. Everything is red green and snowy white today and I’m in an extra-extra jubilant mood because chrissymas only comes round once a year. Chrissymas is just a mere two days away and it cannot come sooner! I must admit I’ve been rather caught up with all kinds of social activities -offline- and that has left londoneater abit bare in terms of content, suffice to say dec08 traffic is looking dire indeed. Though having said that – I pulled my weight last week and managed to put out six posts.

Hurray.

In many ways, last week has been a milestone week as I had finally concluded my quickie wine guide with some of the best wine websites that I know of. In the mid week, I came across the new sexual scent of the century called FLAME which can make you smell like a lustful char-grilled burger. Rwarr. I put out a breakfast review at the tapa room and a christmassy non-review at charlotte’s place. For the super christmassy among you, I assembled a list of assorted cool and quirky christmas prezzie ideas

do have a quick ruffle through. ( I’m still holding out for the robotic chick or the mini cactus keyring )

I’m planning to do an end of year round-up post sometime in the next few days, but I guess chrissymas is an appropriate time to talk about the new site updates which went live last weekend.

Interestingly enough, my little labour of love turned four months old yesterday , still a very young website and I thought I’d polish it up with a rebranding exercise to -unofficially- commemorate the occasion. You can read more about the rebranding and site upgrades here.

london. happenings around the smoke

Apparently, the bank of england hadn’t a clue that ‘crazy’ borrowing from the major high street banks was going to lead to an amazing financial meltdown in the square mile… said mr deputy gov of the bank of england. Wow – so what does he expect britain to do with that piece of information? Mourn his self-professed victimisation? Sorry Mr Gieve, this isnt Evita and I’m not going to cry for you. Elsewhere in the state of london:

AA Gill was slurping oysters at J Sheekey’s new seafood bar and he used every adjective in the book to describe the one thing that was on his mind except the word itself. 4/5 he says, lead and they will swallow. Scandalous.

toptable’s blog of the week… goes to london eater! Hurrah, hurrah, my seven days of fame. Thank you topdogs at toptable – you guys are awesome , I love that I can get 50% deals (sake no hana 50% wow!) and £10 meals from your site! You’ve just given LE the best chrissymas present yet and I’m super grateful.

Pre-christmas binge shopping In light of slumping nov sales, the high street slashed prices by as much as 70% and this resulted in britons spending more than 120 million quid in oxford & regent street last weekend. So much for a contracting economy. I’m still holding out till boxing day to get my tripod and blueridge acoustic.

reading.happenings around the blogosphere

Is it wrong that I’m oogling at pictures of beautiful foodbloggers instead of pictures of their recipes? I mean, I do read the stuff they write but I also can’t help but smile back at my screen when they put up a picture of them smiling (at me??!)

Maybe it’s because of the holiday season that I am feeling brave and holding the mistletoe above me, secretly hoping that digital miracles will occur.

Anyway, I’m already thinking it, may as well blog it , sorry if I’m offending you girls, but everytime you put a picture of yourself up, smiling at me, I smile back . Some of the most beautiful foodies (and blogs) from around the web:

Grace notes NYC eats her way through new york one bite at a time, loves watermelon (me too , I’m just shameless) , her posts are always so bubbly happy and she has the brightest smile I’ve ever seen on screen. Last time I checked she was jumping around in Paris … won’t you fly to london and dine with a simple london eater, oh beautiful woman of the big apple?

Gail the pink peppercornalso recently revamped her site design and has gone minimal too. She writes from canada and there is a prominent (if small) picture of the striking blond on the homepage. Everytime I flip over to her blog – I gasp for five seconds… she was last seen taking pictures of venice… in las vegas. Beautiful.

Bethany tells dirty kitchen secrets in the form of some heart warming recipes. If you flip over to her ‘about’ page, you’ll be greeted with a portrait of the former miss lebanon, whom is as beautiful as her home nation. She was last seen prepping a christmas menu. Somewhere in a west london kitchen, there is a small dinner table with two chairs, a solitary candle in the middle, two plates of steaks and one spare seat for you.

Jun cooking in her indochinekitchen is the perfect woman. Let’s see, how can I describe her. Demure, silky flowing hair, intensely soulful eyes and a smile so sweet I can’t help but melt. She was last seen prepping for an exotic party in the tropics with friends and family – wow, she can really cook.

Ok ok, I apologise if I’ve offended anyone with this, it’s just chrissymas you know – makes me all woozy and stuff.

In an effort to be fair to the fairer sex (its 2008) , I must tell you ladies that the only reason that the foodsnob remains anonymous is because he’s ridiculously good looking. With his vast knowledge of food , that sensitive tongue ( let your imagination run wild ) , this opinionated brad pitt lookalike had to protect his identity from womankind in fear that he would be mobbed if he revealed his identity to the world. Oh yes, I kid you not ladies, I have seen photographic evidence and he’s not paying me thousands of pounds to blog this. He merely wants his words to speak louder than his chiseled chin.

Last Jingles

Merry Chrissymas to one and to all – I hope you enjoy the atrociousness I continue to commit here on london eater. I’m committed to blogging even more quirkyness and will be eating larger and louder as the new year dawns on us all. My mission when I started blogging was to bring a smile to those who love reading and those who love eating and I hope that in 2008, I’ve done just that. There will be a couple more posts before the year ends, so do drop by if you should find yourself surfing the web over the next week, though there won’t be any more food reviews until Jan 09.

I’ve been given the much heralded responsibility of making chicken stuffing this year by the meister, so I’m staying firmly in the kitchen over chrissymas.

Till then, have a great run up to chrissymas and snuggle up tight to your loved ones, plant a *bigfatone* on their rosy cheeks and do tell em’ Kang at LE said ‘Happy chri-ssy-mas’

Happy holidays!

eating happenings here on london eater

I still can’t quite believe that the year is coming to a close now. But before that happens, there’s something called chrissymas to get through first. London is turning cold enough to evoke those wintery feelings. Honestly though, this year’s chirssymas seems abit sterile compared to recent years. I suppose there’s less people shopping this year, but its nice to see that the chrissymas lights still go up to add to the atmosphere. Was walking around high street kensington yesterday and managed to snap a picture of holland park.

Very nice.

I’m happy to report that this week’s eating&reading has resumed normalcy on a sunday even though this is probably one of my leanest weeks in recent memory, but there you go, it’s christmas, I’m not fussed about site traffic or workload because I just want to spend more time with that special someone. Here’s what went down this week here at london eater:

eating&reading: Georgian redhouse return.. on a monday I was so very close to missing two weeks’ worth of eat&read and couldnt bear to do that (it’s a personal benchmark I suppose) so I released it on monday instead. I included a youtube video of the London Mayor Boris Johnson doing his run in the reasonably priced car on topgear. Must watch, he’s goofy funny.

midweek quirker: the weirdest foods I’m not a food critic so I’m not limited to just slating restaurants, if that were what I wanted to do, I would have done journalism and applied to the Times. Ok, the telegraph. I’m a blogger and the creative freedom equals posting about eating live octopus tentacles. Yuck.

london eater does hibiscus (review) This was a monster write up, or much more like I was rambling non-stop about everything from the recession, to the decor to the over use of salt. Still, hibiscus is pretty nice and I won’t mind going back. The sole restaurant review this week, slim pickings in holiday period, I know. I’ll be back next month with more reviews as my social life dies down.

x-factor judges on pizza Did anybody want Alex win it last night? Man, she was really balling wasnt she? I couldnt quite understand why they chose hallejulah as the ‘winning song’ . It’s so totally a rip-off from american idol last season. You know it used to be funny because simon’s slagging was great. Now that I’m desensitized, its just abit bland. Anyway, the italian chain restaurant , rossopomodoro created 4 pizzas with the faces of the x factor judges on them. I want to eat cheryl’s over and over again.

london happenings around the smoke

fluid foundation’s guide to london they claim to be ‘London’s biggest and most popular online Independent Guide to drinking, eating and going out’ ( notice the caps in their quote ) .. yet i’ve never heard of them until today. Hm. Perhaps they are still new, their alexa ranking is like half of mine. Oh no, I tell a lie, they’ve been around since 2000 and have thousands of restaurant reviews. The site does look very cool and I guess it’s another resource for finding things to do in the capital.

the humbug club in essex I saw this on bbc news the other day and just found it absolutely hilarious! Basically, its a bunch of grumpy old dudes in essex who are sick to the stomach of the entire christmas spirit leading up to the actual day. They say that christmas day is fine but the whole month of it – no no. They congregate in some pub every day and they serve reindeer on the menu! Bah, humbug indeed.

Timeout finds 20 ways to have sex in the city ahh yes, good ol’ timeout and that quirkiness, this one needs no introduction I guess. Never thought that there were there were twenty ways to do it in london, but there you go, bonking all the way into the new year.

leicester square funfair is fun. For as long as I can remember, leicester square turns into a fun fair complete with carousels, simulator rides, those ball games where you can win oversized teddys and etc. Great atmosphere. I was actually there earlier today and managed to snap a picture. Not too flattering because it was a quick job, but if you’re in london for christmas be sure to pop into the square, that oversized teddy will always come in handy believe me.

reading happenings around the community

I think running up to chrissymas, everybody will tend to spend abit more time in the kitchen, so I took the timeout to bring you some of the cooler, wackier, tastier , heartier , and definitely christmassy recipes from around the web today:

the constable larder’s eggnog Its like a tradition isn’t it? You’ve got to get drunk on eggnog. Come on, it’s a must. There are many versions of this recipe, but I found a pretty solid one at the constables larder. Although, the best way to make this stuff is to hop on a plane to germany and get one of them genuine eggnog concoctions out of the bottle. They are really strong and really good. Dilute with milk, warm it up or freeze it to your specifications and watch your face go red.

pinch my salt‘s butternut squash and sweet potato gratin is flavoured with garlic, fresh thyme and manchengo cheese. All very nice ingredients and I think it’s a very fitting christmas recipe.

hungry mouse’s cranberry bacon chutney with rosemary and port cranberry check. port check. chutney double check. Jessie says that this can be had all on it’s own, but I have a feeling this chutney will go very nicely with that superiorly juicy turkey your mum is planning to cook for the family. I don’t know if turkey and cranberry is a british thing or not – but I hardly ever read about them, yet it’s almost a staple here. Hm. I don’t know. Somebody want to make me some cranberry chutney and turkey or do I have to do the cooking this year?

‘ultimate’ home aged beef rib roast? One person commented that this way of home aging in your own fridge is not advised. A good rib roast for chrissymas sounds like a perfect meal to me. I was pretty intrigued when he said that he basically stuck the rib of beef in his fridge for three weeks, um, Im no expert but if you leave a piece of meat in the fridge for three weeks – doesnt the blackness mean that it’s gone bad? I’m curious to see the aftermeal follow up video to this:

the mistress of cakes’ chocolate mint cakes! she’s got like four different pictures of the same recipe, but the green mint icing looks so mouth wateringly good on the dark chocolate cakes. The bavarian mint recipe seems deceptively simple to make too – if any of you try this out, DO take a picture and send it to me so I can oogle at it.

counting down..

I still need to show up to work till xmas eve, not too happy about that since I’m already in a jingling mood. Ho. Ho. Ho. Anyway, I can smell the cooking in the kitchen, so I will leave you for now. Next week, I am releasing the conclusion to the wine series and also a breakfast visit to the Tapa room.

Till then, have a great end to the week folks and see you in seven.

Apologising for the lack of eater news, introducing the midweek quirkers and watching boris johnson not turn left in the reasonably priced car.

eating happenings here on london eater

I couldnt do it. I could not go two weeks without an edition of eat&read. Once again, I missed the boat yesterday due to a number of excuses which I’m not going to list here. Lets just say, life is good and I’m glad that Chrissymas is coming

(that’s right I said chri-ssy-mas.)

I’ll be honest, things have been slowing down alittle bit here at the moment, chirssymas parties, get togethers etc.. have kind of cut into my eating time, hence the reviewing slowing to a trickle. I am working on it to get things back on track, but hey, it’s the holidays, I’m sure you feel where I’m coming from.

I’d like to make a few apologies to foodproof and jessie, I’m still working on the guest posts guys, do bear with me, I’m not making any promises on time, but I will get them out to you soon enough!

So I reshuffled the side bars (look to your right; rss readers – do pay the site a visit) – what do you think? I un-hid the search buttons and put the calendar in the top fold for your convenience really. Is it ok guys?

Considering the situation, I was glad that I still managed to get five posts out last week, with the introduction of a new series too:

A recession proof lunch at wild honey lets face it, the economy is hitting everyone right now. Even if it hasn’t yet – there’s the fear that it just might. Chomp! That doesnt mean that my tummy should suffer though, wild honey was my sole eating adventure last week, but it’s the quality , not price and not quantity that counts.

Christmas gift ideas for the merry Come on, I had to do it. I threw in a few worthy foodie ideas in there, but seriously how can anyone resist a realistic robotic chick, a mini cactus, a personalised portrait of mini pictures and a self contained eco-system?!

introducing the midweek eating quirker Do you ever sit there on a wednesday afternoon mashing buttons on the keyboard and think to yourself ‘WHY?’ . Fear not, london eater is aiming to bring some foodie quirkiness to lift the gloom from your afternoon gloom.

Brussels Sprout ice cream (midweek eating quirker) this is part of the christmas menu at vivat bacchus, created by chef stuart ferguson. What are you waiting for? Check out the link now.

A donkey lift to the new real greek (midweek eating quirker) The real greek opened a new branch at spitafields last weekend and to mark the occasion, demitris the donkey taxi-ed diners to the restaurant. As they say, any publicity is good publicity.

london happenings around the smoke

Min jiang, the new hakkasan? Chinese food in london is superiorly crap. It used to be ok, places like ’97 in chinatown used to do the best hainanese chicken rice; but over the years, quality has slowly but surely decreased. Even the venerable hakkasan succumbed when they took away the cucuber wrapped lobster rolls (how could you alan, HOW?!) Is min jiang the revival of chinese in london? Who knows, the prices are keeping me from making a visit at the moment. Maybe next month.

london’s most hidden landmarks apparently, they are right next to each other and can be found near tower bridge. Too vague, check out the video already.

goldfish hampstead apparently this chinese restaurant in north london is a godsend. Candice loves it and matt norman gave it 9.95 out of 10. It’s on my to eat-list, maybe it should be on yours too?

Boris Johnson on Top Gear How many of you caught the london mayor on top gear last night? Can I just say, he was just awesome – he’s funny and goofy, yet he has this kind of innocent charm that actually makes the (eccentrically) perfect person to run London. See the vid below:

knit night cupcakes stumbled upon this at vegan yum yum and i just have to say it looks very cool. Knitwear made of marzipan decorated over cupcakes. Do have a look here.

lootie + doof this is a delicious food blog from chicago where they write about cooking, hosting and the politics of food. It’s simple site design is so attractive ( Im big on minimalism ) and their latest post is a recipe for the perfect dollop of creme fraiche ice cream, yum.

cooking… by the seat of my pants! this guy wings it as everything he cooks blatantly neglects any recipes whatsoever. Ah, the true spirit of the low cost independent blogger. Free your mind man.

coming to a screen near you

I paid a visit to hibiscus and that review will be unleashed in the next few days. I’m going to (finally) write part seven to conclude my wine guide series, aiming to make my first guest blog spot at simply scrumptious and finally write about my welsh trip … which was, oh gosh about three months ago?

I’ll keep you posted folks, have a great start to the week, chrissymas is not far away so do make sure you have your red sweater handy.

Weekly round-up of yummi-news from around london and the blogosphere. Now released every Sunday and brought to you by a London eater.

My buttons need sewing while I’m on a quest to find more burger, reading up on 25 other ways to use vinegar and blogging about guest bloggers.

eating happenings here on london eater

When your colleagues come down with something one by one, and you wake up with a stuffed up nose, you know that winter is just around the corner. Brr.. The temperature dropped like a stone yesterday and I’ve duly prepared for that with a fresh pair of gloves and broke out my winter coat and turtlenecks. My coat is still missing two buttons and I inadvertently asked Jennie if she’d be so kind as to help a sewing challenged london eater put the buttons back so that I can keep warm. Sometimes, its nice to have people do things for me, it’s a memory and it just makes things mean so much, because everytime I button up my coat, I’ll feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that it was Jennie who sew them on. It’s not just buttons you know.

This has been a rather hectic week offline for me, but I was glad that I still managed to get five posts out. It was unofficially burger week here, but I didnt want to overload with 10 burger posts, only did two burger related ones:

hydepark winterwonderland is awesome! the german christmas market has stalls with chocolate dipped strawberries… and chocolate dipped bananas.. and really tasty chocolate smothered ginger bread.
