Just thought might let you know that they are doing 50% off special til end of Sep if you mention the chinatown newsletter deal:

http://www.chinatownlondon.org/newsletters/september10/index.html

So I told my girlfriend there on Thur for dinner, had a table upstairs by the window so was quite nice and even romantic. Food was mostly good, except for the very hard batter salt & pepper squid. We had stir fry chilli crab and was very tasty and with the 50% off food offer, turned out pretty good value than if we had to pay full price. Service was actually quite good.

So I decided to bring my partner to try on Fri night and lucky we booked early-ish for 7pm, it filled up very quickly. Once again we experienced very good service right from the time we walked into the door to every one who served us. We liked the jasmine smoked ribs and king prawn in green curry sauce.

If you have time before end of Sept, by all means take advantage of the offer and give it another go. I was pleasantly surprised about the service after reading some of the earlier reviews out there. = )

Last year I attended a wedding reception at Plum Valley and sympathise with your sense that it half meets the West / East fusion. All dark and sultry, it's decor was let down by slow and uninformed service. There were some hits in the dumpling department and the Mongolian fillet and another pepper steak dish were tasty, but the rest was less memorable. Returning to try their dim sum menu, Turnip Boy and I agreed that our money would be better spent in the nearby Yauatcha.

Hehe this post still makes me laugh... I agree that it's bollocks for fine dining CHINESE restaurants to charge up to £8 for rice, which I assume is £2 pp. I mean really, it's rice goddammit. Anyway, looks like I can safely give Plum Valley a miss. Thanks for taking the hit ;)

Frozenace60 - Will keep that in mind if I ever go to Beijing someday.

Mark - Yup the 60 macro.

Wild Boar - Oh yes, service is still such an issue with chinese restaurants.

London Chow - Hehehe, the cursed willow cream!

I was there when it first opened. It wasn't too bad the first time round. The service was quite good as well. Then again, I didn't order Willow Cream :)

That said, I did bring two colleagues - a Ghanaian and a Kiwi there and they absolutely loved it... much more than I did anyway.

It's a shame that despite their intentions to become more up-market, most Chinese restaurants still have inherent flaws with their service. Sounds like another Gerrard Street restaurant to avoid...

I agree that Leong's legend is great for no-fuss excellent food.

Once in Beijing, this restaurant in a hotel (Oriental Plaza) kept on explaining their menu to me, praising themselves to be this Singaporean fine dining fusion establishment.

When the food came out, the soup was horrible, just imagine a refined seaweed soup... and the service was even worse.

From your review of Plum valley, I seem to get the same kind of vibes. If I had to argue over the desert, I'd call the manager like they do everywhere else.

I really like your reviews and thanks for saving me the money I would have otherwise spent.

If you ever go to Beijing, you could try Da Dong Roast Duck, they've kinda upped their game and turned it into this fine dining Peking duck place (loads of embassy people go there).

Cheers
