I really like Canteen - have been there twice. Last time we all got their pies of the day with different fillings and they were both really good value (greens, mash and yummy hot pie for £10.50) and tasty.

Ooh I agree with Lizzy - that little cheesy charcoal brick is a bit offputting! (although still beautifully shot!)

The coffee is good because its from monmouth. But Essex Eating is right the service is not top notch. Also, I had this bubble and squeak thing and that was cold as well. I heard the lamb is good though but to be honest... i dont think ive the heart to try!

I wasn't completely won over by Canteen either - I think it may have been better when it first opened but now feels quite chain like and very heavily branded.

Helen - Thanks for that :D alright I'll go back and edit the word abit later.

Essex Eating - Seems like the Spitafields branch experience is hit and miss. I didn't mention much about the service at Canteen, but here it is.. my greeter was fantastic, very warm and pandering. OTOH, the waitress who served me was very cold for some reason, she seemed frustrated.

I had a bit of a less than stellar brunch recently in the Spitalfields branch of Canteen. Wasn't that busy, but greeter was pretty cold and unfriendly, forgot our drinks order and forgot the jams that went with the toast.
As for the food, no complaints there my eggs benedict was lovely. The coffee (when it arrived) very good. Just such a shame the service was so poor. Very hit and miss. Interestingly, I left feedback via the canteen website where It states that you'll be contacted concering any negative feedback within a month. Nada - suspect it goes straight into the delete bin.

I had Canteen on my list of places to visit ages ago, but it was removed in one of the culls. PS did you know it's actually Welsh rabbit, not rarebit? I learned that when reviewing Mark Hix's book!

Goz - that's a little worrying, so they have bad fish and chips eh? Hmm, well, I have to say, my duck fat chips had an armor exterior so perhaps they like over frying things at Canteen, not sure really. As I said in my review, I would like to go back to sample more variety. I will follow up on this, especially the fish and chips on my next visit and let you know if perhaps there is variation in quality between the branches.
