[...] it is well-known that Paul Ngo, the head chef at Pearl Liang used to lead the capital’s most famous restaurant for lobster noodles at Mandarin Kitchen. While the latter has maintained its legacy since Paul’s departure, it comes as little surprise that he has brought his most commercially viable creation to Pear Liang. A variety of sauces are available including shaoxing wine or black bean and one can even choose to have it as a sashimi. We chose ginger and onion. The sauce is great, thick gravy-like, full bodied flavours, so richly aromatic of its major ingredients. Juicy chunks of lobster meat wok-fried with savoury floury bits, noodles are just a tad chewy. Overall, the dish has an effervescent quality about it, perhaps due to generous lashings of shaoxing wine, satisfyingly lively. I prefer this to the current Mandarin Kitchen. [...]

Have you noticed at most Chinese restaurants, including MK that the tail is mysteriously missing from the lobster in the lobster noodles. Surely you should be given the whole animal espcially for the price you pay. What happens to these tails, is it some sort of triad conspiracy. The tail is also the best part of the lobster...

Hmmm, I've had the lobster noodles here and thought they were very average. They are done to cater to Western palates and not a Chinese palate. Overrated in my opinion.

Kang, you're spot-on to place that succulent lobster photo at the top of your review; what a vision! Mind you, that tantalising shot of the waiter's hand about to divvy out the goodness, well, that one really had me salivating. Very nice photos indeed.

This is a dish that I've never ordered without parental guidance, the scope for error is far too great to leave to amateurs! But given that the folks are in Australia, it may well be time for me to get some friends together and set sail for the lobster and the baby squid at MK. Thanks for the review.

Catty - hehehe its funny how we talk non stop and then when a good dish arrives, we drop everything and just concentrate on eating :D

Helen - I had PL takeaway last night and tried their seabass and frog legs which both tasted good. I'll have to try teh lobster noodles at PL to compare as well :D

Clinton - I think crispy duck does it for £22 right? Though quality wise, i thnk MK is shoulders about the rest.

Su-yin - the fried baby squid was very good, i was surprised how good it was, def worth a try and excellent accompanying the lobsters me thinks.

HoneyB - thanks :D

cyn - indeed!

I agree that MK has one of the best lobster noodles in London... I've found everything else quite average though. Then again, I've never ordered the fried baby squid dish, which sounds really good!

my old goto place for lobster too. these days...if you're lucky, chinatown also offers various value for money lobster noodles for less money. but unlike MK, the freshness can vary whilst MK is more consistent.
