eating&reading 23rd Dec 08: The superduperspecialchristmas eatingbingeingjunkalong extravanganza roundup

Weekly round-up of yummi-news from around london and the blogosphere. Now released every Sunday and brought to you by a London eater.

A snowy christmas eve‘s eve special!

Good morrow fellow webbist reader, trust all is merry, jingly and that you have stocked your fridge up and someone is busy in the kitchen (as we speak) shoving all manners of savoury goodness into oversized birds (sorry vegans) while the latest brew of hot mulled herbies or cold alcoholic custards are being concocted. For there isn’t a better time to be furrily merry and no one is more so than yours truly 😀

Say it with me: Happy Chrissymas.

No, not Christmas.

Chris-sy-mas.

Yes. Everything is red green and snowy white today and I’m in an extra-extra jubilant mood because chrissymas only comes round once a year. Chrissymas is just a mere two days away and it cannot come sooner! I must admit I’ve been rather caught up with all kinds of social activities -offline- and that has left londoneater abit bare in terms of content, suffice to say dec08 traffic is looking dire indeed. Though having said that – I pulled my weight last week and managed to put out six posts.

Hurray.

In many ways, last week has been a milestone week as I had finally concluded my quickie wine guide with some of the best wine websites that I know of. In the mid week, I came across the new sexual scent of the century called FLAME which can make you smell like a lustful char-grilled burger. Rwarr. I put out a breakfast review at the tapa room and a christmassy non-review at charlotte’s place. For the super christmassy among you, I assembled a list of assorted cool and quirky christmas prezzie ideas

do have a quick ruffle through. ( I’m still holding out for the robotic chick or the mini cactus keyring )

I’m planning to do an end of year round-up post sometime in the next few days, but I guess chrissymas is an appropriate time to talk about the new site updates which went live last weekend.

Interestingly enough, my little labour of love turned four months old yesterday , still a very young website and I thought I’d polish it up with a rebranding exercise to -unofficially- commemorate the occasion. You can read more about the rebranding and site upgrades here.

london. happenings around the smoke

Apparently, the bank of england hadn’t a clue that ‘crazy’ borrowing from the major high street banks was going to lead to an amazing financial meltdown in the square mile… said mr deputy gov of the bank of england. Wow – so what does he expect britain to do with that piece of information? Mourn his self-professed victimisation? Sorry Mr Gieve, this isnt Evita and I’m not going to cry for you. Elsewhere in the state of london:

AA Gill was slurping oysters at J Sheekey’s new seafood bar and he used every adjective in the book to describe the one thing that was on his mind except the word itself. 4/5 he says, lead and they will swallow. Scandalous.

toptable’s blog of the week… goes to london eater! Hurrah, hurrah, my seven days of fame. Thank you topdogs at toptable – you guys are awesome , I love that I can get 50% deals (sake no hana 50% wow!) and £10 meals from your site! You’ve just given LE the best chrissymas present yet and I’m super grateful.

Pre-christmas binge shopping In light of slumping nov sales, the high street slashed prices by as much as 70% and this resulted in britons spending more than 120 million quid in oxford & regent street last weekend. So much for a contracting economy. I’m still holding out till boxing day to get my tripod and blueridge acoustic.

reading.happenings around the blogosphere

Is it wrong that I’m oogling at pictures of beautiful foodbloggers instead of pictures of their recipes? I mean, I do read the stuff they write but I also can’t help but smile back at my screen when they put up a picture of them smiling (at me??!)

Maybe it’s because of the holiday season that I am feeling brave and holding the mistletoe above me, secretly hoping that digital miracles will occur.

Anyway, I’m already thinking it, may as well blog it , sorry if I’m offending you girls, but everytime you put a picture of yourself up, smiling at me, I smile back 🙂 . Some of the most beautiful foodies (and blogs) from around the web:

Grace notes NYC eats her way through new york one bite at a time, loves watermelon (me too 🙂 , I’m just shameless) , her posts are always so bubbly happy and she has the brightest smile I’ve ever seen on screen. Last time I checked she was jumping around in Paris … won’t you fly to london and dine with a simple london eater, oh beautiful woman of the big apple?

Gail the pink peppercornalso recently revamped her site design and has gone minimal too. She writes from canada and there is a prominent (if small) picture of the striking blond on the homepage. Everytime I flip over to her blog – I gasp for five seconds… she was last seen taking pictures of venice… in las vegas. Beautiful.

Bethany tells dirty kitchen secrets in the form of some heart warming recipes. If you flip over to her ‘about’ page, you’ll be greeted with a portrait of the former miss lebanon, whom is as beautiful as her home nation. She was last seen prepping a christmas menu. Somewhere in a west london kitchen, there is a small dinner table with two chairs, a solitary candle in the middle, two plates of steaks and one spare seat for you.

Jun cooking in her indochinekitchen is the perfect woman. Let’s see, how can I describe her. Demure, silky flowing hair, intensely soulful eyes and a smile so sweet I can’t help but melt. She was last seen prepping for an exotic party in the tropics with friends and family – wow, she can really cook.

Ok ok, I apologise if I’ve offended anyone with this, it’s just chrissymas you know – makes me all woozy and stuff.

In an effort to be fair to the fairer sex (its 2008) , I must tell you ladies that the only reason that the foodsnob remains anonymous is because he’s ridiculously good looking. With his vast knowledge of food , that sensitive tongue ( let your imagination run wild ) , this opinionated brad pitt lookalike had to protect his identity from womankind in fear that he would be mobbed if he revealed his identity to the world. Oh yes, I kid you not ladies, I have seen photographic evidence and he’s not paying me thousands of pounds to blog this. He merely wants his words to speak louder than his chiseled chin.

Last Jingles

Merry Chrissymas to one and to all – I hope you enjoy the atrociousness I continue to commit here on london eater. I’m committed to blogging even more quirkyness and will be eating larger and louder as the new year dawns on us all. My mission when I started blogging was to bring a smile to those who love reading and those who love eating and I hope that in 2008, I’ve done just that. There will be a couple more posts before the year ends, so do drop by if you should find yourself surfing the web over the next week, though there won’t be any more food reviews until Jan 09.

I’ve been given the much heralded responsibility of making chicken stuffing this year by the meister, so I’m staying firmly in the kitchen over chrissymas.

Till then, have a great run up to chrissymas and snuggle up tight to your loved ones, plant a *bigfatone* on their rosy cheeks and do tell em’ Kang at LE said ‘Happy chri-ssymas’

Happy holidays!
