Agreed; a most helpful review of sake. I have been trying to find the good stuff in London for years but one is astonished by how little the restaurants themselves seem to know about it.

Honestly not much. I'm starting to see the cheapy ones in sainsbury now and I do know that selfridges does a sake range which is 'westernised' ... but i get all my sake from japan centre and i believe them all to be japanese imports.

So can't really answer your question.. although I'm happy to try them out and this would actually make for an interesting post I think comparing 'real' sake and the 'artificials' :D I'll keep you posted!

No problem, I actually felt strange writing my last post as I'm quite new to the world of sake, but it's always good to see a site singing it's praises, keep up the good work!

Can I ask what experiences you've had with sake produced outside Japan, I've always steered clear of it myself preferring 'real' sake imported from Japan - but is there a noticeable difference?

AJ - actually you are quite right about that :P
Honjozo is indeed a premium sake but reading my description again, perhaps i was too adventurous in my choice of words. I was trying to differenciate the junmai grade (which is pure in the sense that it does not feature added alcohol) against the honjozo grade (which is 'unpure' becos of alcohol) - but this is a result of my biasness toward pure stuff.

And yes - futsu-shu is the real table wine equal - thanks for this by the way, I need to update this accordingly so it doesnt mislead :P

I'm by no means an expert on sake, but isn't honjozo considered one of the premium sake classifications, also known as tokutei meishoshu (albeit one of the two lowest quality of these special grade sake, along with junmai, as both have the rice ground down by at least 30%). With the 'table wine' equivalent sake being refered to as futsu-shu?

I apologise If I've got this completely wrong though!
